How untapped indigenous knowledge can prevent catastrophic wildfires and combat global warming

As an increasing number of countries struggle to deal with wildfires that have become more frequent and more destructive, UNESCO is highlighting the untapped value of alternative models for fire management based on traditional knowledge. Indigenous peoples have kept forest fires in check for millennia by pre-emptively using controlled burnings, but colonial governments stamped out such practices. UNESCO is working with indigenous peoples to preserve and promote these practices, integrate them into national fire policies, and let these communities guide us on the path towards a more sustainable future.
