ISFMI shares the potential of Traditional Fire Management during events of the Italian Presidency of the G20
Ms Ari Gorring of the ISFMI and Executive Director of the Pollination Foundation, today presented the work of the ISFMI toward revitalising Indigenous fire knowledge for climate and communities during the conference ‘Addressing the Climate Crisis through Culture - Preserving Cultural Heritage, Supporting the Green Transition’, one of three conferences hosted by the Italian Ministry of Culture as part of its 2021 Presidency of the G20. The meetings are being attended by experts, scholars and practitioners from all over the world, gathering proposals and reflections that will feed into the discussion at the G20 Culture Ministers' Meeting on 29 and 30 July.
The fight against illicit trafficking in works of art, the effects of climate change on cultural heritage, the creative industries and the digital revolution, and the interaction between culture, training and education are the topics at the centre of the next G20 Culture Ministers' Meeting at the end of July, which the Italian Ministry of Culture led by Minister of Culture Dario Franceschini, began to address this week in a series of international conferences.
Cultural issues are a special feature of the Italian Presidency, which has decided to include them among the fundamental pillars on which to build a solid new start. The decision to hold a dedicated ministerial meeting also confirms the line taken in 2017 when, in Florence, the first G7 Culture Ministers' Meeting was held, whose final declaration reiterated the commitment of the States to include meetings of the Ministers of Culture and international organisations within the major international summits.
During the webinar, Ms Gorring spoke of the role of traditional fire management reducing emissions, protecting biodiversity and supporting communities in the north of the Australia, and the work of the ISFMI in revitalising Indigenous traditional fire knowledge and practice in Botswana and globally.
