ISFMI Partners Workshop Report - Darwin, 2023

From Feb 23 to 25, 2023 the International Savanna Fire Management Initiative (ISFMI with the Darwin Centre for Bushfire Research (DCBR)) hosted a workshop for partners at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, Australia.

The workshop had several objectives including discussions on Traditional Fire Management (TFM), including key priorities, emerging trends, and implementation best practices and opportunities. ISFMI partners shared experiences and needs in fire management from their home countries and identified some key opportunities and gaps. The workshop also provided an opportunity to discuss methods and standards, carbon markets, MRV, Gender, fire management operations, pilot projects, and demand and carbon markets.

At the conclusion of the workshop, all partners recognized that wildfires are a critical challenge in all of their countries and that fire is both being exacerbated by and contributing to climate change. Partners agreed that the TFM approach could enable them to address their increasing fire challenges while supporting communities and mitigating climate change. Participants expressed the need for continued support to develop a method, establish robust Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems, engage communities and understand carbon markets. ISFMI agreed to continue working with and supporting partners in implementing TFM in their home countries.
