  • WHAT:  This webinar will explore the exciting opportunities and challenges that exist at the nexus of fire management, reconciliation and Indigenous-led conservation. This session will pull on expertise from the interdisciplinary team supporting the Conservation through Reconciliation Partnership’s ‘Indigenous Uses of Fire Steering Committee’. This team is actively exploring how best to engage Indigenous fire knowledge in the context of Canadian national parks and conservation spaces more broadly.

Pyrolife ISFMI Webinar

Pyrolife will host a dedicated Webinar focused on the work and achievements of the ISFMI during Pyrolife’s Webinar Series ‘Living with Fire’ on 31st March 2021. ‘Living with fire’ is the first cycle of a set of webinar series dedicated to PhD students whose purpose is to train and provide relevant knowledge to the new generation of researchers.

During the webinar on the work of the ISFMI, Ari Gorring will present examples of cultural fire management from northern Australian perspective and Programme Director Sam Johnston will introduce the International Savanna Fire Management Initiative and its focus on revitalising Indigenous fire practices globally. A summary of the research and science that underpins the savanna fire method which proves that cultural fire practices reduce GHG emissions and wildfire, revitalise cultural practices and create jobs for people in rural and remote areas will be also presented.

Pyrolife is an initiative supported by Marie-Curie Action, part of the European Union’s Horizion 2020 Program. PyroLife, will support 15 PhD students across the globe to pursue cross-disciplinary, wildfire-focused projects. The aim for the projects is to aid in facilitating the advancement of holistic, integrated wildfire management. For its participants, PyroLife focuses on incorporating diverse backgrounds that may promote creativity for innovative wildfire strategies. A key goal of the initiative is to instill intersectional, transferable knowledge and maximize employability for its graduates.

The Webinar is open to anyone interested in learning about this subject, with the main target audience being PhD students, scientists and practitioners.   • Learn about the Women in Fire Initiative which aims to connect First Nation women working on country to global opportunities.

  • Hear about upcoming events and opportunities.

Global Environment Facility (GEF) Consultations with Civil Society on Traditional Knowledge - Deadline for Registration Nov 15 2020

The GEF extends an invitation to join the virtual GEF Consultations with Civil Society on Friday December 4th from 7:00 to 10:30 a.m. EST, to discuss the Application of Traditional Knowledge by Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, Stewards of the Global Environment, a topic which was selected by Council members at its 57th meeting in December 2019.  

This consultation is organized jointly by the GEF Secretariat, the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Group (IPAG), the GEF CSO Network and the GEF Small Grants Programme. The consultation aims at bringing the voices of indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLC) in a dialogue with civil society, GEF Council members, GEF Agencies, the GEF Secretariat and other stakeholders to discuss the value of traditional knowledge in supporting the conservation of biodiversity, mitigation and adaptation to climate change and combating other global and local threats, including responses to the COVID 19 pandemic.
