Women in Fire - Report of the Knowledge Exchange 21 June 2021

On 21 June 2021 women from Botswana and Australia gathered (on Zoom) to share stories about women working on fire.

The session included women from the Government of Botswana, Government of Australia, Aboriginal Carbon Foundation, ISFMI and the Pollination Foundation. Knowledge and experiences shared included reflections from community interviews on the cultural histories and role of fire with women from the Tsodilo Hills Community of northern Botswana and on lessons learned from women’s involvement in the 2021 fire management operations in the Tsodilo Hills. Australian Government participants shared knowledge on the role of the Working on Country and Indigenous Protected Area Programs, with 30% of the Indigenous ranges supported by Australia’s Indigenous Ranger Program being women. Representatives from the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation shared their experiences in developing the Core Benefits Verification Framework (CBVF) as a strengths based approach focusing on a peer-to-peer review that determines what each Individual communities’ need’s and wants are, and enabling communities across northern Australia to deliver benefits beyond carbon that have meaning and value to the communities involved.
